How to Treat Hip Flexors Pain
If you have hip flexor pain then chances are they're too tight. Tight hip flexors is a common problem among both athletes and people who sit around for most of the day.
Tight hip flexors are due to the muscles in this area of the body shortening up. Your hip flexor muscles will become shortened when you stay in a seated position for most of the day on a daily basis. These muscles can also shorten up on you if you overwork them without stretching in between workouts.
The Importance of Hip Flexors
Your hip flexors are important because without them you wouldn't be able to walk or run like you do now. These muscles are responsible for bringing your knee and legs back and forth while you walk or run.
Along with making sure you're able to move around efficiently, your hip flexors are connected to other impotant muscles in your body like your spine, groin, and and lower back. With that being said, when your hip flexors begin causing problems due to tightness it can lead to pain in other areas of your body too.
How to Unlock Tight Hip Flexors
The best way to treat hip flexor pain is to unlock your hip flexor muscles. Unlocking your hip flexor muscles means increasing the flexibility and mobility in this area. This is the only way to lengthen these muscles that have gotten shortened due to inactivity or over-activity.
There are various things you can do to unlock tight hip flexors and lengthen them out. However, the most effective and easiest thing you can do is begin performing certain stretches and exercises that work the area specifically.
Stretches and Exercises for Hip Flexor Pain
One of the easiest stretches to unlock tight hip flexors and reduce pain involves doing the following:
Stand in an upright position with your feet shoulder width apart.
Now raise one of your knees up towards your chest. You want to raise the knee up slowly to your chest while the opposite leg remains firmly planted on the ground.
Once your knee is up to your chest hold it there for at least 15 seconds before dropping it back to the ground.
Do this about 10 to 15 times making sure your knee is up as high as you can manage towards your chest area.
Repeat with the opposite leg after you've done the first 10 to 15 reps.
You'll immediately begin feeling relief in your hip flexors after you perform this simple stretching exercise. Another great hip flexor pain treatment are squats.
When you do squats they help relieve pain by strengthening your hip flexors and the surrounding areas.
To do a squat properly you're going to want to begin in a standing position.
Now put your hands out in front of you and bend both your knees slowly until your lower body is positioned like you're about to sit down. While you perform this motion make sure your upper back remains upright.
Once your thighs are parallel to the floor hold this position for at least 15 seconds before returning to the standing position you began in.
You'll feel this exercise working your hip flexors and other areas like your groin and lower back. Continue performing these stretching and exercises regularly each day to get rid of pain in your hip flexors.
